A Walk With 50 Cent

I learned something very valuable the other day while I was out walking the dogs.

It’s something that I think we all know in the back of our minds but we never really think about it until we are told it, over and over.

“Our opinion of ourselves is what we will become.”

This is so true in so many areas in our life, but I want to focus on the how this effects our businesses. And because most of our readers are in the dog industry I will use examples from the dog world.

What I have found that is missing from the dog industry is that lack of training on how to run a business. You do a course to become a dog trainer or groomer and then you are on your own to make it happen.

There are no restrictions on who can call themselves a dog trainer, groomer, run a daycare etc etc… which opens the doors to an abundance of businesses in your area.

The problem is there is a business side to running a business...who would have thought?

Know Your Competition – Don’t Become Them

I know people that spend a lot of time “watching” their competition to see what they are doing and how they are getting clients. This is fine as you should be aware of what’s around you but be carful that you don’t get caught up in it. I see it all to often that people watch other companies and see them have success with something and then they try to do it themselves.

9 times out of 10 they don’t have as much success and they get discouraged.

The reason they don’t have the success is because they are trying to copy an “outcome”. The outcome is the end result of something, example, 50 Cent being a famous rapper.

When you focus on the outcome you forget about what it takes to make it happen.

50 Cent had a dream, he wanted to be a “somebody”, and he wanted to become an influence in the music industry. When you read his book “The 50th Law” you will be blown away by what he went through to get to where he is now. (I highly recommend his book)

Now if you wanted to become a famous rapper like 50 Cent you can’t expect it to just happen over night. You need to be willing to put some blood, sweat and tears into your dream.

Put some blood, sweat, and tears into your business/dream!

You can never become someone else, you are who you are and you need to embrace that. You can copy what other people do but you will never be able to copy their personality and their WHY. Their WHY being what motivates them to succeed and this is a huge factor for making or breaking any business.

I do social media marketing and help small businesses get focused on what’s important. The other day I sat down with the owner of a very new business to discuss some marketing and business advice. I always start any consult with trying to get to know the owner’s personality and the business itself.

When I got to my favourite question to ask...

I was met with a dumb founded look like I was an alien or something. I asked him WHY are you starting this business? He stuttered and fidgeted a bit and couldn’t come up with anything.

I told him I would NOT work with him until he comes up with a WHY, other then MONEY. The reason I do this is because my WHY is to help other business succeed, and if their WHY is to make MONEY the business will usually fail when the times get tough. Guess What Happened!

A month later, he had moved onto something else. Don't become a victim of shiny ball syndrome, KNOW YOUR WHY!

Everyone needs to know his or her WHY!

Why do you do what you do? This is what will drive you, what will get you jumping out of bed in the morning, what will give you that glow that will attract people to you.

People that don’t have a WHY tend to jump around from business idea to business idea. When the going gets tough they don’t have the passion and motivation to give some blood, sweat and tears to make it through. This is when they jump to something else.

Know Your WHY, and put some Blood, Sweat and Tears into it!

Push through the hard times; this will make reaching your goals so much sweeter! And believe in yourself, your opinion of yourself is what you will become.
