The other day I was hiking the dogs and chatting with a good friend. Mid conversation she said; “He was All Talk and No Trousers!” I looked at her and laughed…

“I have never heard that!” “Yeah,” she replied “Same as ‘All talk no Show’ but funnier.”

So that led us to talking about Idioms we knew, had grew up on or learned from travelling the world and in turn inspired this post.

Funniest part is we couldn't remember for the life of us that these "sayings" were called idioms.. well we did remember eventutally and my friend gets the credit for that. (haha she always had the better grades in school)

First lets start by reminding you what an Idiom is… you see we all know but if I was asked to define it I'd be speechless (haha ya me speechless, I know right)

Well no wonder as the definition for Funny Idiom is:

“A manner of speaking that is natural to native speakers of a language.”

Does that help? HAHA of course not!!

It made me more confused, so if you are on the same page as me (fine if your not) let me further explain through simple words an example and a picture!

Tiffany’s Definition of Funny Idioms is as follows:

Every Culture & language has a collection of clever & funny sayings. They generally are a funny phrase that has a “figurative meaning” and to see the picture that would go with them you would laugh. Some are more commonly used than others and I find you usually learn them from a funny relative or family member.

Here are some North American Funny Idioms (haha broadening the Canadian theme today) that can be used in everyday conversation (well maybe not everyday, but after reading this I encourage you to start using Funny Idioms more. You will stand out..people will remember you).

“Best thing since sliced bread”

= A good invention or innovation. A good idea or plan.

“Wow this 'beeping key finder thing' is the best thing since sliced bread”

another..

“It’s raining cats and dogs”

Ok... I am sure from the first example you get it and now have hundreds of Funny Idioms Running through your head .. hmm did I just create one there?!

I want to be exciting here and share with you some Funny Idioms from around the world.

So put down your water, coffee or beer (as you don’t want it coming out of your nose laughing) and get ready to be culturally enlightened with some World Wide Idioms.

(oh and these graphics were taken from a “Idioms around the World Site”. I usually like to create my own graphics but these ones where so cute and inspired my post today)

I like this because when I spent a year teaching English in the Asian Culture a big part was teaching slang / conversational Enlish. They loved to hear sayings that we used in Canada and always found them soo fascinating and funny. Well my view was the same towards them. They had great sayings for things that were new to me and seemed to not make sense. Have you ever noticed you can buy the funniest shirts in Japan that don't really make complete sense in English. They are so hip over there and I Love that we all can laugh in the same language!

Let's continue to tour across the Globe through Idioms and I hope you have realised by now I am not saying Idiots...

Well I hope I have brought some light, enjoyable reading to your weekend.

If you enjoyed these I want you to do 1 thing …

Share with me in the comments an Funny Idiom you can remember using or hearing when you were young. Also what's the strangest Idiom you have heard?

Yes that was 2 things .. thank you X 2.

Tiffany
