5 Tips to Travel without Travelling

So if you know us you know we like to travel. You also know we have 2 dogs and are busy full time in the summer with our dog business. That can make it tough sometimes to travel as much as we would like too year round.

I was looking at the calendar last night and Jan 24 is circled as our next “trip”. Well that is nearly 2 months away and we will be around the house until then.

We have had a great year of adventure & travel though it has all been within the Usa & Canada. It has been over a year since we’ve been to a place where we can’t understand the menu, have to use funny hand signals or a loud voice to find the bathroom or spent 10 min figuring out which way was up on the map.

So even though I am aware of where my passport is, I am excited to get a few more stamps on it soon.

But, if there is something I have learned from travelling over the last year “closer” to home, it’s that you don’t actually have to travel 5000 miles away to a far off jungle to feel travelly… though that helps.

So I thought I would compile a list that has 5 ways to make it feel like you are travelling when you can’t at the moment.

Think of it as Travel Therapy…

1. Hang Out with Friends from other countries or friends that are travelling.

I was fortunate to live in Whistler for 10 years and one thing I loved about the resort town was meeting people from around the world all times of the year there. Whether they had settled in for a ski season from Sweden or simply were visiting for 2 weeks from Ireland you were surrounded by smiles, accents and culture.

Now I don’t currently live in a resort town but have made some awesome friends I can easily keep in touch with online. A few of them are walking the earth and others have found a new place to live for the next year. Regardless while we are at home I love hearing their travel adventures, skyping them while they are sweating in their bathing suits and we don our touques. WE talk about new experiences, share laughs and learn about wherever it is they are at. It keeps my mind going and motivates me to plan our next trip.

2. Try New Foods

One of my favorite things about when I travelled over seas was going to the Grocery Store and finding random foods. I would always be sure to buy 1 new item I had never heard of each time I shopped. One of the reasons I love travel soo much is the New Foods I get to try and what an easy way to Travel without Travelling then trying something new at home. From Lime Lays Chips (odd but delicious) and Jasmine Tea to Snake Soup (yes it tastes like chicken) & the after hours bug cart on Koh San Rd it is all part of the experience.

We LOVE our morning coffee from around the world and the views that go with it!

Look around in your neighbourhood for a new restaurant, try something different on the menu or even buy some foods you never have before from the grocery store and try a new recipe! Declare it Travelling Tuesday Meals from the globe night.

3. Explore where YOU Live

Sure it is always fun to go on a trip but we often forget there is so much to see in our own down or neighbouring towns that we can plan a trip close to home. Exploring the trails, farms, markets, new restaurants or even the local gym (where we learned what Pickle Ball is!!)

SO make a list of 10 adventures you can take close to home and knock them off 1 at a time.

A lot of people think their homwtown is boring and why would people want to hear about it...well I will tell you why. Discovery is fun and I have never been to Sweden, New Zealand or Branson Missouri lol so I want to see the cool stuff, hear about the fun places and imagine tasting the food from there... that's why.

4. Listen to Music

Another thing I love about travelling is the different music you hear depending what country or even state you are in. Something that always lifts my spirits on a cold, dull day is latin music!! Makes me feel warm and want to dance. Immediately brings me to that happy place I am at on a tropical beach.

5. Look back at old pictures & watch Movies

I really enjoy going back and looking at photos from past trips. We are lucky to have computers and online photo albums now a days to keep everything at our finger tips but there is something to be said for my box of old photographs. Part of the thrill of when I spent a year in Hong Kong back in 1998 was dropping off the film to get developed at the shop. You could choose all these sizes to get your pictures back in and they would come with a free album.

Regardless going through old photographs is fun, they say a picture is worth a thousand words and this is true. Well at least my pictures are worth thousands of stories.

Movies are a great way to let your mind relax and your imagination take over. Especially when you watch movies that have places you have been to in them and also places you dream of going.

Yes a Bonus Tip because you are still reading....

6. Plan Your Next Trip or Create A Travel Dreamboard

What better way to work towards something exciting. Start to plan your next trip. Now you can still make it spontaneous but by looking at things you want to visit, pictures of where you are going it is Exciting!

If you look on the weather app on my phone I don't just have my local town I have destinations from around the world. I love checking that on days it is really cold here I can look to DOminican, Thailand or even Alaska to not feel so bad!!

As we should all have a Vision / Dream Board I think it is great to have one of places you want to see. I have a Pinterest Board of this as well. The world is a humungus place and it is great to have a list of where you want to travel, explore and live.

Hope those helped you escape your 4 walls today and give you a new way to explore without having to pack your suit case, funny travel pillow and dig out your passport...

But you should do all of that as often as you can because like I said the world is a big place so there is a lot to see... this will just help you inbetween your adventures.
